Once the hunter, Selah is now one of the hunted, and she knows only one person who can help her - Bodhi Locke, the Lander her brothers hope to sell in the Mountain.
Review: The cover of this book is what captured my attention. I love the celtic symbol and the futuristic mark on the girl placed above the old-fashioned images at the bottom. It really captured my attention. Thunder is about a girl who grows up in hundreds of years in the future, years after nuclear war has pretty much destroyed the planet. Animals and plants are mutated and many are dangerous, great cities of the past are now ruins are completely sunk into the ocean, and very little remains of what was. Selah and her family live a very basic life farming the land and hunting.
Selah hunts for food…but her father and brothers hunt men, specifically, Landers. Landers are people who, well, land on their shores. They bare a mysterious mark and none of them seem to recall where they came from. Selah's father captures the Landers and sells them to the Company for biomark.
For her part, Selah has been raised to hate Landers and she can't wait to capture her first Lander and prove to her father and brothers she is worth something. More than anything, she wants her father to realize she is a worthwhile contributor and to call off her sale in marriage to a neighbouring clan.
Everything in Selah's life changes though the moment she touches the Lander that floats up on shore and her own biochemistry begins to drastically change.
Before she knows it, she is swept into a story she never could have imagined as she partners up with the very Lander she tried to capture to gain back a treasure she never knew she'd lost.
This is a good story and the world is well thought out. I was very impressed with how thoroughly the author explored her world and her ideas. What a great imagination!
I felt that the dialogue could be a little awkward at times and that the romance progressed a little too quickly and was forced. The draw of this story is the Mountain plot and mysterious Landers….the romance really was just a background thing and I found it a bit distracting when the characters abruptly fell in love. They could have eased into their feelings a little more naturally.
All in all though, a good book. I'm looking forward to finding out what happens in the next book and learning more about who these Landers are.
